Mer moves to Greensboro, E creates music video and censored Kimba

Filed under: General — Samillena @ 2:51 pm

Mer and her parents are in Greensboro looking at houses. Mer has a great new job there and will be moving away from the Windy City soon. Last night we were able to meet up with them for dinner. We went to a steak house recommended by their hotel. It was good conversation and food. E crashed about 8 and slept through most of it though. We are looking forward to having Mer nearby. Cool situations always seem to surround Mer. We met Mer and her parents in the lobby of their hotel. There was some kind of meeting/convention going on there. The majority of the people were deaf. It was a pretty beautiful thing to see everyone talking with sign language. I need to learn some basic greetings.

During last week E helped me out on the computer. She hit some key combinations that I’d never seen before. Eventually the machine just rebooted. E and I have been working on her recording career. If you have the time, check out E’s first music video. Listen carefully and try to hear E sneeze 3x in rapid succession. She needs to work on that. (James, I’m still working on the long version.)

While Liz was coming home from a conference and E was sleeping Friday night, I worked on a video of E playing with Kimba (Shawn and James’ dog). I tried to get fancy and add sound effects. Cutting to the chase: I can’t post the video. The sound effects fit so well that it looked/sounded like Kimba was about to eat E. Of course he wasn’t. James and I were watching/holding them both. Still E had her hands all over Kimba’s head and in his mouth. For his part, Kimba put up with her and was a very good dog.

First ‘Solid’ Eats

Filed under: General — Samillena @ 8:56 am

Here’s E getting ready for her first solid meal. ‘Mommy, this is fun!’

After the 6 month appointment, E got the go ahead to start on some solid food. You might remember that her doctor said that there was a correlation between postponing starting solid foods and reducing the chance for allergies. Similac and Enfamil might have sponsored this correlation study. Typically, I’m a paranoid cynic. However, if there’s the potential that E will be healthier, then I’m all for it. Besides, in a free market, Gerber would get it together and sponsor a contradicting study that proves that no correlation exists and that babies on smashed carrots at three months are smarter. Since E’s digestive tract is a bit slow these days (you can read between the lines), the nurse suggested that we start with green veggies rather than the rice cereal, so we decided to go that route.

One of the books Liz had read about the first feeding suggested that you should first put out the food in front of the baby. That way, the baby could inspect the food and not be frightened by your pushing it into her mouth. These books are very helpful, but I thought this was very funny. E ‘investigates’ anything that comes near her by putting it in her mouth. She had no problems eating the first spoonful of food.

MMMM peas. To see a little video of E’s first food, click here.

‘That wasn’t so bad. Thanks, Mommy. ‘

Halfway round the sun.

Hey! Look at me! I’m 6 months old today! Big day for all of us.

It was also E’s 6-month doctor appointment… Baby E is 16 lbs. 15 oz. and somewhere between 26 and 27.5 inches… yup, those were the 2 measurements the nurse got. How’s that for precision? I think I remember Paula saying that S & N regularly “shrunk” between their doctor’s appointments, so this is probably not a unique phenomenon. In any case, the doctor believes that E is right about at the 50th-60th percentile in both categories. Her head measures at the 75th… big ol’ noggin. We will be starting E on cereal this weekend… we’ve waited a bit, in hopes that E will avoid some allergies. You can bet there will be some messy pics posted here soon.

And, along with seeing the doctor, of course there were shots… 5 shots, including the flu shot (finally). We can confirm that there are still some available for those of you who have been wondering…

Baby E had a special treat last night– Nanny & Grandpa Bill were in town for some meetings, so they took us out to dinner. Unfortunately, Mike missed the fun because he was at his class. Grandpa Bill hadn’t seen E since mid-December, so he definitely took the opportunity to hold his big girl.
