Miss Allison’s class
This picture was taken on the first day of school.
There are 15 children in E’s class, and Miss Allison has a student teacher right now….so lots of personal attention– a perfect start to Kindergarten! E was a little confused at first since she knows that Allison is also a first name. And since all of her teachers at Apple Tree were called by their first names… Her old teachers were Joy and Julia. Michael and I always call them “Ms. Joy” and “Ms. Julia” to go with that southern practice we picked up in North Carolina. So she kept calling her teacher “Allison” when referring to her at home. Well.. in proper elementary school fashion, Allison IS, in fact, Miss Allison’s last name. But that was hard to explain… We’ve got it now, though.
E’s class is a combined Kindergarten/ Grade 1 class. So if Miss Allison sticks around in K/1, she will be E’s teacher for two years.
E seems to benefit from the mixed-age class– I think she likes having some kids to watch who know what they are doing. The transition has gone pretty well so far and E seems to really enjoy it. It seems that the big accomplishment for week one was learning the Pledge of Allegiance. Michael worked on it with E during bathtime every night. In class, they are learning nursery rhymes, keeping them in their “poetry journals” and then when she got home on Friday, she “read” (recited) Little Jack Horner to us. They ate plums in class to go with the story…. both dried (aka prunes) and fresh. E liked the fresh ones.
This week they are doing Little Miss Muffett. I wonder if she will try curds and whey???
