Halloween 2009

We had a fun couple of days for Halloween. In parts of Iowa, there is a tradition of “Beggars’ Night,” which dates from the 1940s, when the towns separated the kids (Beggars’ Night) from the mayhem that teenagers and adults engaged in (Halloween). So we trick-or-treat on a different day here. This year and last year it was October 30, but I’ve heard that that can vary. A Des Moines-area tradition, also from the 1940s, is that the kids tell a joke at each house. E’s joke is a knock-knock and it’s pretty cute…. it is about an “impatient cow.”
Michael and the girls carved pumpkins on Wednesday night while I went grocery shopping. Michael– looking for maximum efficiency, used the Sawz-All. It was pretty hilarious. And effective.

Last night, Ann, Darin, and their kiids came over at 6 for trick-or-treating. It was quite windy and chilly, so Ann and I stayed at our house with baby S and gave out candy. The dads took the 4 girls.

Michael and J had purchased gummy eyeballs and body parts. Gross. But the kids who came to the door thought they were cool!!
Happy Halloween, all!!
